LONG BEACH, NY– The Colonials overcame a sluggish start and kicked their offense into high gear Friday night, earning a 7-2 victory over division opponent Long Beach. Kyle McEnany led the way with five points, while Brandon Cope netted two goals with two assists. Wes Westendorf and Ryan Caiola both netted their first goals of the season in the win.
Westendorf opened the scoring by pouncing on a McEnany rebound in front. Kevin Remson extended his point streak to five games with a goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
Long Beach would battle back and knot the score at 2-2 midway through the first before Misha Mshar ripped a McEnany pass in off the crossbar to put Danbury in front 3-2 at the conclusion of the first.
Danbury had a strong second, adding three more goals. Brandon Cope would bank a shot in off the goaltender’s pads, then later fed Kyle McEnany for his 24th goal of the season. Ryan Caiola took a goalmouth feed from Cope and tucked the puck in five-hole for the third goal of the frame.
Cope struck again on the powerplay in the third to wrap up a 7-2 win. Alex Fernandes was stout in goal, making 38 saves to backstop the winning effort.
“Our first period was a bit unfocused, but credit to our guys for getting their games in order and playing Colonials hockey for the last 40 minutes,” said head coach Kevin Cunningham. “It was fantastic to see Wes and Ryan score, but even better to see the reactions from their teammates. We’re becoming a true team at the right time of the year.”
“It was another great team win,” commented Cope. “It was great to see Wes and Ryan get their firsts. Couldn’t be happier for them. CHOO CHOO!”
Danbury closes out the regular season with a pair of home games this Saturday and Sunday against the Elmira Jr. Soaring Eagles. Danbury trails Elmira for first in the division by just two points.
