DANBURY, CT– The Danbury Colonials netted five goals on 58 shots on goal to secure their sixth consecutive victory, topping the Long Beach Sharks 5-1 at Danbury Arena Sunday afternoon.
Maverik Skeans scored the game’s first goal, capping off a passing play initiated by an Adam Palomeque faceoff win to Cole Madzey who in turn threaded a pass up ice to a streaking Skeans. Misha Mshar would bang home a rebound for his fourth goal of the weekend to give Danbury a 2-0 lead.
Long Beach would cut the lead in half in the opening minutes of the third period. The Colonials would respond in the form of a Brandon Cope tap-in goal moments later. Cole Madzey and Connor Lefkof would add goals of their own in the final frame, finishing off a 5-1 win.
Shane O’Brien would stop 19 shots in the game, extending his personal win streak to five games. He also earned his first assist of the season on Lefkof’s powerplay goal.
“It was a great team effort,” commented Madzey, who had three points in the game. “It feels really good to keep the winning streak going. We started to really play our game in the third, it was a great way to finish the weekend.”
“It was great to see our offense continue to produce, particularly our powerplay,” said head coach Kevin Cunningham. Danbury’s special teams unit produced a pair of powerplay goals in the third period.
“Having five scorers in a 5-1 win is nice, but I was equally pleased with our defensive effort,” he continued. “Shane was strong in net, we made sure he saw pucks and cleared rebounds. I’m happy to see our team start to reap the rewards of their hard work.”
