The Danbury Colonials have inked local goaltender Alex Fernandes for the 2019-20 season. Fernandes, an 18-year-old out of Bethel, CT, most recently played for the Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury Icecats, serving as team captain his senior year. As a familiar face around the Danbury Arena, Fernandes was demonstrably excited to join a junior team so close to home.
“Growing up here and seeing how much the community loves hockey makes me super excited to get started,” Fernandes said. “I can’t wait to work with Coach Cunningham and the rest of the staff and to get on the ice with all my teammates!”
“Adding a goaltender of Alex’s caliber is a great development for the Colonials,” said head coach Kevin Cunningham. “I believe that our goaltending will be a strength for our team all season long and Alex will be a big part of that!”
Fernandes was named to the Southern Connecticut Conference All-Conference Second team last season as a senior. His athleticism and size in net proved to be major assets. Prior to his time at BBD High School, Fernandes served as the backstop for the Connecticut Jr. Rangers 16UF team in the USPHL.
“[Fernandes’ signing] is made even better by the fact that he’s a local product who is a high character young man,” Cunningham added.
The Danbury Colonials are a Tier III team in the NA3HL based out of Danbury Arena. The puck drops on their inaugural season Sunday, September 15th at Skylands Ice World in New Jersey as they take on the Skylands Kings. Their first home game will be played at Danbury Arena on Friday, September 27th against the New England Stars at 7 p.m.
