ATTLEBORO, MA– The Danbury Colonials opened up their NA3HL East Showcase with a 5-1 loss at the hands of the Northeast Generals at the New England Sports Village.
The showcase, which will feature three consecutive days of action for the Colonials, got off to a rocky start with the Generals leaping out to an early lead. Carson Asper buried a shot 3:28 into the first period to give Northeast a lead they would not relinquish.
The Generals would bury the Colonials late in the second period with three goals in the final seven minutes of play, two of them coming just 12 seconds apart.
Dylan Webber would pot the lone goal for Danbury on the powerplay, with assists to Brandon Cope and Kolby Donovan. Webber now has four goals in his first seven games. Cope has logged eight points in that same stretch.
Shane O’Brien stopped 36 of 41 shots in the loss.
“Our guys put together a pretty solid effort tonight,” head coach Kevin Cunningham explained. “Despite a slow start they battled all night. The Generals took advantage of a couple miscues to build their lead.”
Despite the undesirable outcome, Cunningham saw several positives from the contest.
“It was great to see our powerplay convert,” he emphasized. “Brandon [Cope]’s pass to Dylan [Webber] was gorgeous…Shane was very good in net, especially early when we needed him to be,”
The Colonials will not have very long to lick their wounds, as they will play their second of the three-game Showcase tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. They will be facing a familiar opponent, the New England Stars, to whom the Colonials have lost twice this season.
