Colonials sweep Kings, seize first place in Northeast

DANBURY, CT– The Danbury Colonials surged to first place in the Northeast Division by sweeping a pair of games from the Skylands Kings on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Saturday’s contest began with early pressure from the Kings, who managed to put one past netminder Shane O’Brien less than two minutes into the game. A Connor Lefkof shot from the point would get redirected to the back of the net, which set off a chain reaction of goal trading.

Joseph Arnold would give the Kings a 2-1 lead, but a Brandon Cope powerplay goal would knot the score heading into the first intermission. The Kings would take a 3-2 lead into the third, but Kyle McEnany would once more bring the game to even with a gorgeous individual effort to break in past the defense and bury a goal in close.

The game would head to overtime, where newcomer Zack Turner would earn his first goal of the season on the powerplay.

Sunday’s contest was dominated in possession by the Colonials, as they leapt out to a 3-1 lead before the end of the first period. Cole Madzey would sneak a wrister through the five-hole of Kings netminder Jacob King, while Kolby Donovan would wire a shot past King’s blocker. Brandon Cope would tally the third of the frame.

The second period was held scoreless thanks to a terrific effort by goaltender Michael Nardi, who stopped 12 Skylands shot.

After a fiery late-second-period timeout called by head coach Kevin Cunningham, the team responded in turn with three goals and 25 shots on goal in the third frame to bury the Kings 6-1.

The Colonials have some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday and are back in action December 5th and 6th for a road set against the L/A Nordiques.
