DANBURY, CT– The Danbury Colonials put themselves back in the win column Friday afternoon, besting their division rival Elmira in a thrilling overtime matchup. Brandon Cope scored twice and Shane O’Brien was stellar in net to lead the Colonials to a 3-2 win.
The Jr. Soaring Eagles scored first when a misfired Danbury pass gifted Elmira a breakaway. The score would hold until late in the second period, with several key stops from O’Brien keeping the Colonials close, including a penalty shot save on John Kosa.
A few shifts later, defender Ryan Wojciechowski dumped a bouncing puck into the attacking zone shorthanded. It took a wonky bounce, sneaking its way past the Elmira netminder and tying the game at a goal a side.
In the final minute of the second period, Kyle McEnany found Cope on the powerplay with a firm pass through the seam for a one-timer which put the Colonials on top.
Elmira would even up the score in the third with a breakaway goal, sending the game into extra time. Just 31 seconds into overtime, Dylan Webber dug the puck out of the corner and wired a pass to Cope, who ripped home the game-winner.
“Today was a great time to bounce back and get back on the right track,” said Webber after the win. “We are better than what our record says and it’s time to show who we really are.”
“We transferred a ton of concepts we’ve been working on in practices lately,” commented assistant coach Brian Allen. “We’re looking to carry this momentum into tomorrow.”
The Colonials and Jr. Soaring Eagles will rematch tomorrow afternoon at Danbury Arena at 3:30pm.
