Coach Cunningham sounds off on Colonials’ upcoming Opener

DANBURY, CT — The Danbury Colonials are set to play their first game in franchise history this Sunday against the Skylands Kings at the Skylands Ice World in New Jersey.

Operating in their first season in the NA3HL, the Colonials join a newly reshaped Northeast Division, joining the Elmira Jr. Soaring Eagles, Long Beach Sharks and the Kings. With two full weeks of practice under their belts, head coach Kevin Cunningham and company are locked and loaded for the start of the season.

“It’s always a situation where you want to get after it,” Cunningham explained regarding. “We’ve had enough practice, enough of an opportunity to get our basics in place.”

Skylands finished third in the Northeast Division of the NA3HL last season with a record of 20-25-2 in the regular season. They were bounced in the first round of the Fraser Cup Playoffs in a three-game series with the Oswego Stampede.

The Colonials will be rocking a fresh set of threads on Sunday as well, opening their season with bright orange sweaters with the city name in diagonal silver-and-black letters.

“I think our guys have worked extremely hard since the day they got here,” Cunningham said. “They showed us a lot of really good signs….I think they have a really good understanding of how we want to play.

“We’re not going to be perfect,” he concluded, “but I want to see how hard we compete and how hard we play against a different colored shirt.”
